İstanbul Oncology Global

The Orthopedics and Traumatology Department focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and surgical management of musculoskeletal conditions, injuries, and disorders, covering two main areas: Orthopedics and Traumatology.

Orthopedics
deals with preventing, diagnosing, and treating disorders and injuries related to the musculoskeletal system. This system includes bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and other structures supporting and enabling movement. Treatments encompass both surgical and non-surgical approaches and address a wide range of issues, including;

  • Fractures and bone injuries
  • Bone cancers
  • Arthritis and joint problems
  • Sports injuries
  • Joint replacement surgeries (e.g., hip and knee replacements)
  • Corrective surgeries for bone deformities (e.g., scoliosis)

Traumatology
specifically deals with traumatic injuries, which are sudden and often result from accidents or other high-impact events. Traumatology is basically responsible for managing and treating traumatic injuries, such as:

  • Fractures (broken bones)
  • Soft tissue injuries, including ligament and tendon tears
  • Dislocations
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Injuries from falls, car accidents, or sports-related incidents

Common surgeries in the Orthopedics and Traumatology Department

  • Fracture Repair: Surgical intervention is often necessary to repair broken bones (fractures).
  • Joint replacement surgery: Commonly performed for severe arthritis or joint degeneration, particularly in the hip and knee.
  • Resection of Soft Tissue Tumors: Surgery is used to remove soft tissue tumors affecting muscles, tendons, or ligaments.
  • Reconstruction: Following tumor resection, reconstructive surgery involving bone grafts or prosthetic implants may be required to restore function and appearance.
  • Meniscus Surgery: Surgery is used to repair or remove damaged meniscus tissue with tears.
  • Tendon Repair: Tendon injuries or tears may require surgical repair.
  • Scoliosis surgery: Surgery is performed to correct an abnormal curvature of the spine, known as scoliosis, by using spinal instrumentation such as rods, screws, and hooks to stabilize the spine.
  • Bone lengthening surgery: Increases the length of a bone, typically in the arms or legs, by making controlled fractures in the bone and using an external or internal fixation device to separate the bone ends gradually and precisely.
  • Congenital Deformities: Correct structural or functional abnormalities present at birth in order to improve a patient’s physical appearance, function, or overall health.
